Welcome to Spicewood

An unincorporated community west of Austin in Burnett County, Texas, the little town of Spicewood is known for its vast cypress-covered land, access to the gorgeous Colorado River, and friendly, tranquil vibes. Rural and set apart from the dense urban feeling of large cities, Spicewood enables residents to have a true sense of peace while still maintaining access to commuter opportunities. Spicewood rests just north of TX-71 and is less than an hour away from Austin.

The area was settled in the late 19th century, and the residents here have a true appreciation for the area’s long-standing history as a small but diverse place to live. Likely named due to a large number of spicewood trees along the nearby Little Cypress Creek, this area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Mainly residential, the area’s housing varies in style and expanse. From lavish Spanish Colonials set atop stunning peaks to affordable, modernized new-builds in beautiful, gated communities, Spicewood can cater to a range of needs.

People & Lifestyle

The atmosphere in Spicewood is rural, residential, and laid-back. The population is under 10,000 residents, making Spicewood an ideal place for those looking for a little privacy and space of their own. Many Spicewood addresses are part of the Lake Travis Independent School District, one of the state’s top districts. Consequently, this area is a great place for families to settle down.

Dining, Shopping, & Entertainment

Mostly residential and rural, Spicewood is still less than an hour away from several major shopping malls and centers, including Hill Country Galleria. Grab your favorite indulgent coffee at Runaway Luna Lifestyle Coffeehouse to refuel as you spend your day browsing dozens of stores, including popular brands like Dillard’s, Athleta, and H&M.

For unbeatable southern fare in the area, be sure to check out Opie’s BBQ, a down-home restaurant specializing in delectable smoked meats and comfort food must-haves like a tater-tot casserole. Authentic and appetizing, the menu options even come with the chance to get an entire quart of your favorite cobbler. At Apis Aviary, you can appreciate the organic freshness in every bite of the “locally-sourced, globally-inspired” food. The restaurant’s garden provides some of the produce for the meals—everything else procured from local farmers—and they also have a “house honey” made from their own hives.

It’s impossible to talk about Spicewood without mentioning the superb wineries and vineyards that rest on the bounteous swaths of hills. Offering a chance to get a “taste of Argentina” in Texas, El Gaucho Winery not only serves up top-tier bottles but also includes the option to try the mouth-watering steak at their “Wine and Asado” events. Another must-try, 5 Soul Wine Co is set on 10-acres of lush Texas Hill Country and has a unique, relaxed venue. Enjoy your food and wine in the courtyard with friends, take up a game of pickleball, or sit inside to watch a game on the TVs as you savor their refreshing, accessible wines.

Things to Do

With so much natural beauty, Spicewood will make sure you never run out of recreational activities or sights to see. At the vibrant Krause Springs—which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places—visitors have the chance to choose from 32 springs, a man-made pool, and a natural pool to relax in.

Another stunning natural feature, the Hamilton Pool Preserve, is home to a 50-foot waterfall that pours over a steep outcropping of canyon rock to create an alcove-style pool. This magnificent area also has hiking and camping options and makes for the perfect place to fall in love with Texas’s scenery.

For camping on the cliffs that overlook Lake Travis, beach swimming, equestrian trails, hiking trails, and 9 miles of shoreline, visit Pace Bend Park and delight in the bevy of exploration opportunities.
